Mostly Victorian, Turn-of-the-Century, and Art Deco but ranging from early 19th century to mid-twentieth century. Of European origin; French and Italian. Mounted on 131 "cartes" of binder's board (measuring 9 x 11 inches) with double-back tape. General condition is excellent. Some of the brasses are signed by the engraver.

Folio (9 1/4 x 14 1/4; 36.5 cm). Contemporary red morocco, covers with double gilt fillet border enclosing a double gilt panel, the outer panel border formed by a single ornamented roll with a crown at each corner, the inner panel border formed by two ornamental rolls with corner crowns; unlettered spine with six raised bands, compartments filled with gilt ornaments, all edges gilt; "Dutch" gilt floral endpapers stamp signed Johann Lupus Ehinger. Small paper label with manuscript shelf mark ("Q6") in upper corner of pastedown. Corners and joints rubbed; spine faded to brown, joints splitting at top two inches, leaves F1-H2 slightly cockled at lower outer margin. Still a handsome copy.

8 x 12. 30 leaves printed in black & red, with 9 relief prints by Ron King. Bound by Silvia Rennie (stamp signed) in full green morocco with large inlaid pictorial panels on each cover. Eve in the Garden of Eden with the snake is inlaid on the upper cover in white, various greens, black, & red morocco. Adam's panel fills the lower cover. The designs reflect King's illustrations. The rounded spine has title inlaid in white morocco, the letter"O" replaced by a red apple. Pastedowns are white morocco; flyleaves are black vellum. Protected by a suede-lined black cloth traycase with white pigskin spine label. The case has light soil & wear. Rennie's binding is in perfect condition.

Portfolio of the same leather, textured olive board sides, and wood contains two folders: (1) seven proof sheets and (2) an extra suite of the engravings, each titled & signed. Both volumes are housed in a slipcase (7 3/4 x 14 1/2) of leather, paper boards, and wood with a glass window at the top, revealing 8 hand tied flies. Fine.

Full purple-blue morocco, upper cover gilt with title enclosed by ornamental cartouche & rules, spine similarly decorated, wide turn-ins gilt, moire endpapers, all edges gilt, in fleece-lined full blue pigskin slipcase. Spine uniformly faded to a darker blue; small scuff to head, but about fine. Tipped-in printed note: "This book is bound at the School of Apprentices...with acid-free leather specially manufactured according to the recommendation of the [Royal] Society of Arts Committee on Bookbinding."

Four volumes (complete set). Royal Quarto (9 x 11). Illustrated by numerous American painters and engravers. Full straight-grain black morocco by Benjamin Gaskell, gilt- and blind-tooled borders, embossed plaque center panels, spines gilt in 5 compartments; edges & turn-ins gilt, glazed yellow endpapers, a.e.g. Some foxing, especially near the plates (more so in the first two volumes). Front hinge of Volume IV is open, but sewing is firm. Bindings lightly rubbed along joints & extremities; but the gilt and the embossed plaques are fine.

Color-printed frontis, engraved title, xxi, 162 pages, each printed within a border of gilt rules. Illustrated with 51 color-printed wood-engraved vignettes. Wood-engraved (some tinted) head- and tailpieces after Humphreys. Publisher's red cloth over beveled boards, embossed & gilt in an elaborate pattern, all edges gilt. A penciled note says book was recased in 2006. Touches of foxing throughout; last gathering loosening. Tips & spine corners worn through, light soil to upper cover but still fresh and bright. A very good copy.
