Roger Powell was one of the most important 20th century binders. He was entrusted with the rebinding of The Book of Kells and The Book of Durrow. Among his major clients were the collectors Major J. R. Abbey and John M. Crawford, Jr. This catalogue was bound by Powell for Crawford, who had the finest collection of Chinese calligraphy in the West (now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art). Crawford lent many pieces to this Philadelphia exhibition.
Printed at the Spiral Press by Joseph Blumenthal, who wrote "If I were asked by a harassed St. Peter outside the Pearly Gates to show only one printed book on which I should be judged, I would hope to have with me the weighty volume 'Chinese Calligraphy and Paintings in the Collection of John M. Crawford, Jr.'"
