(Nuremberg, early c19). A diamond pattern (12 1/2 x 11) of simple flowers, grapes, & pomegranates embossed and gilt on a blue paste ground (15 1/2 x 13 1/4) is signed in the design. There is a central fold line, as these papers were traditionally stored folded by the papermakers. In this sheet the embossing has become flattened. A good example. Item #16836
Full, unused sheets of gilt papers such as this are very uncommon, as they were cut up for bookbinding. They were printed from wood and/or metal blocks and dusted with gold.
