Howell revived the craft of hand papermaking in this country beginning in the late 1940s. He built his own pulp beater. Made from his home grown flax, along with hemp, linen dish towels, blue jeans, & other materials, his papers were aesthetic objects. Howell created special papers for artists such as Jackson Pollock, Jasper Johns, and Lee Krasner.
