Paris: Gruel & Engelmann, 1887. 5 x 6. CXCII pages, each richly illuminated by chromolithography in colors and gold + 12 full page illustrations, and terminal pages to record family births, marriages, etc. Each leaf is tipped to a hinge, allowing the book to be opened flat. Bound by Gruel (signed at spine base,) in full red morocco gilt in a pattern of an elaborate cross, fleur-de-lis and the initials H B; gilt & gauffered edges, turn-ins gilt, woven red silk endpapers. In its padded brown leather box with the initials HB. Signed "Gruel" at edge of box, which has light wear and "bloom." Box is missing its clasp and doesn't close firmly. Book is fine, as new. The quality of ornamentation and execution is exquisite. The borders & illustrations were designed by Ed. Moreau and executed on the lithographic stones in 10 or more colors by A. Pralon. Chromolithography by Engelmann & Graf.
