Designed specifically for printing in two or more colors, these triangular quads in four sizes fit together. The specimen shows some combinations in black, as well. There's a "geometrical" series of combinations and a "mathematical" one.
OCLC locates 3 copies: only the Newberry copy is catalogued under"Thorowgood" (dated 1840). England's National Art Library and the V&A copies are catalogued under "Robert Besley"and dated 1848. In the 19thc. the Library of Marlborough House and the NY Typothetae both listed the book under Besley. Besley joined the Fann Street Letter Foundry in 1838. He created the Clarendon typeface -- the first to be patented --in 1845.
